How to Stop Chocolate Cravings with EFT Tapping | Emotional Eating Support
Craving chocolate — does it mean you’re addicted? Why do these cravings happen? And most importantly, how can you stop feeling out of control?
Hi!
First of all, my apologies if any of the photos in this post feel triggering.
If you’ve ever felt like your chocolate cravings mean you’re addicted or that you’re somehow out of control, you’re not alone. Studies show that up to 80% of people experience chocolate cravings at some point. It’s a common human experience, not a personal flaw. More often than not, these cravings are your body or mind’s way of asking for something deeper: comfort, energy, emotional release, or a small moment of peaceful satisfaction.
In this post, we’ll explore why chocolate cravings happen, what they may be pointing to underneath the surface, and how a simple technique like EFT tapping practice can help you address your needs, without the guilt and shame.
Does Craving Chocolate Mean You’re Addicted?
Cravings don’t necessarily equal addiction.
Addiction involves compulsive behaviour that’s hard to control, even though one knows it can be harmful.
Craving chocolate is usually more about habit, emotion, or physiological needs.
Chocolate contains substances that can feel pleasurable, but a craving is often your body’s way of signaling something, like low energy, emotional stress, or an electrolyte imbalance. It’s a signal, not a failing.
Why Am I Craving Chocolate?
Here are some common reasons:
Emotional Comfort: Many people turn to chocolate to ease feelings of stress, sadness, or boredom.
Dietary Restrictions: Restrictive eating patterns may increase the frequency and intensity of cravings.
Physical Needs: Fatigue or low blood sugar can trigger cravings for a fast energy fix.
Mineral Deficiency: Some experts suggest cravings could be linked to low magnesium or other minerals.
Habit and Environment: Routines or places (like the kitchen) trigger habitual reaching for chocolate.
According to a Hotel Chocolat study about 80% of people admit to craving chocolate regularly. This shows that chocolate cravings are a very common experience rather than a personal flaw.
Recognizing your triggers is the first step toward shifting your response.
Signs You’re Experiencing a Craving
Cravings aren’t always intense or obvious. They can be subtle, persistent, or even disguised as hunger or habit.
Noticing the early signs of a craving gives you a moment to stop and think about what you really need.
Here are some common signs you might be experiencing a chocolate craving:
A strong, sudden urge to eat chocolate, even if you have just eaten or aren’t physically hungry
Restlessness or agitation, especially when trying to avoid eating it
Persistent thoughts or fantasies about chocolate – its taste, its smell…
Emotional shifts, like feeling low, anxious, bored, or needing comfort
Habitual patterns, like reaching for chocolate at a certain time of day or during specific routines (after meals, while watching TV, during work breaks)
Physical sensations, like mouth-watering, tension in the stomach, feeling unable to focus…
The key is not to become critical of yourself, but to be aware of those signs. A craving is a message. When you can make sense of what it is trying to tell you, you can work with it. This is where tools like EFT come in.
Why Am I Craving Chocolate?
Stopping cravings doesn’t mean fighting or punishing yourself. It means listening and reacting with compassion and awareness. Here’s how:
Nourish your body with balanced meals that satisfy hunger and energy needs.
Notice your emotional state: are you tired, bored, anxious?
Shift your environment or routine when cravings strike (go for a walk, journal your emotions, call a friend).
Use EFT tapping to reset your nervous system and eliminate the craving.
EFT Tapping Script to Gently Reduce Chocolate Cravings
EFT (also known as “tapping”) is a simple, effective method that involves tapping on acupressure points while acknowledging how you feel. It can help calm your nervous system, reduce the emotional intensity of the craving, and create space to respond with more clarity and care.
Step 1: Identify & Acknowledge the Craving
Before tapping, take a moment to check in with yourself:
- Rate the intensity of your craving from 0 to 10
- Notice where you feel it in your body
- Identify any emotions that are coming up (e.g. anxious, tired, bored, stressed)
Step 2: Setup
Start tapping (gently!) the side of your hand while saying the following statements:
Even though I’m craving chocolate right now, I reckon it is different from hunger and more likely an emotional need. I choose to be aware of it.
Even though my need to eat chocolate feels irrestible right now, I am willing to let it go anyway
Even I have this chocolate craving, and it feels so intense, I am willling to let it go.
Step 3: The Tapping Sequence
Tap each point about 5 times while repeating the following phrases:
- Eyebrow – I have this craving for chocolate right now
- Side of Eye – It feels so hard to resist
- Under Eye – Chocolate craving
- Under Nose – I have this craving for chocolate
- Chin – Chocolate craving
